Biography

Carolyn Jean Cotner Flett

Carol was born on January 19, 1942. She married Howard Flett on January 7, 1961. Together they had three boys; Mark, Scott, and Travis Flett. In time, she had three grandchildren; Logan, Thornton, and Ayla Flett. Carol was a remarkable and loving wife, mother, and grandmother.

Carol belonged to the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. She retired as a bank teller. She never met a stranger. She loved to socialize and host events at her home. Her home also became “home” to many of the boys’ friends that would spend a holiday or stop by to say hello when they came to town.

After retiring, she devoted herself to many benefits. If you were a friend that was ill or having a rough time, Carol would be the first to show up with a wonderful meal prepared with love.

Both Howard (husband) and Scott (son) were veterans. Carol became a part of the Ladies Auxiliary at the VFW in St. James. It was there, her passion for veterans grew. She volunteered countless hours, baking cookies to take to the Veterans Home and hosting meals at the VFW to raise money. She started a golf tournament in St. James to raise money for the Wreaths Across America, which places a wreath on each grave at MVH in St. James during the Christmas holiday. She also spent the majority of her time throughout the year calling on local businesses to help her achieve the goal she had set for herself… to make sure EVERY grave had a wreath! She later joined the American Legion Post #99 Ladies’ Auxiliary. The last thing she did on this earth was prepare a salad for a young man (that she didn’t know) that was joining the Marines. His going away party was the next day.

It is our mission, as a family, to carry on her tradition to place the wreaths and to REMEMBER, HONOR, AND TEACH about the veterans and families that gave the ultimate sacrifices for the freedoms we enjoy today.

Let’s remember together.
